Chapter Educational Programs

CFMA currently offers a wide range of educational programs and workshops for construction financial professionals. From “The Basics” of construction accounting to the finer points of construction taxation and treasury management, there’s something for everyone.

Choose a full-day (8-hour) program or several half-day (4-hour) sessions to meet your goals – and to appeal to members and prospective members alike. Whatever you decide, CFMA educational programming can help your chapter succeed!

Our courses are available for hosting as Group-Live programs only and are all CPE-credited under the National Association of State Boards of Accountancy (NASBA).


The Basics of Construction Accounting

The Basics of Construction Accounting Workshop is designed for accounting professionals new to the construction industry as well as non-accounting construction industry professionals who want or need a better understanding of construction accounting processes, construction cost management systems, job costs and job cost reporting, the WIP, and the most important elements of a contractor's financial statements. This one-day class presents an introduction to the key processes that make construction accounting unique.

Prerequisites:
This is a group-live course at the Introductory level. No prerequisties or advance preparation required.

Upon completing this one-day workshop, you will be able to:



Accounting and Reporting

Learn how to use acceptable accounting and reporting practices to your company’s advantage and familiarize yourself with sample contractor financial statements. This course covers associated accounting issues, control and allocation methods for overhead, benchmarking and effective performance measures, classification of direct and indirect contract costs, and recent FASB pronouncements and exposure drafts.

Prerequisites:
This is a group-live course at the Introductory level. No prerequisites or advanced preparation required. A basic understanding of construction accounting & financial management is recommended.

Managing the Risk of Insolvency: Issues in Bankruptcy

Bankruptcy filings are up 30%. That’s why every CFM must have a basic understanding of what happens when a client, project owner, subcontractor, or GC files for bankruptcy protection. This course provides an overview of what you need to know in order to protect your company.

Prerequisites:
This is a group-live course at the Intermediate level.  A basic understanding of construction accounting & financial management is required. Completion of CFMA’s Risk Management and Contracts 101 courses is also strongly recommended.

Cash Management

Did you know that it’s possible for a construction company’s CFO to generate more profit on a project than the project manager? It’s true. Effective cash management is the key. This course covers the cash flow life cycle, ways to optimize cash flow, and cash forecasting techniques.

Prerequisites:
This is a group-live course at the Introductory level. No prerequisites or advanced preparation required. A basic understanding of construction accounting & financial management is recommended.

CCIFP Overview Seminar Information

This one-day, intensive session provides an overview of the body of knowledge that every CCIFP should know. Take-aways include the seminar workbook, plus CFMA’s Study Guide for the CCIFP Exam, and 8 CPE credits!
 
Prerequisites:
This is a Group-Live course at the Intermediate & Overview levels. At least three years of industry experience & a basic understanding of construction accounting & financial management is recommended.

Account & Reporting



Construction Taxation, Part 1

This full-day program presents an overview of the taxation issues unique to the construction industry, and is appropriate for GCs and subs of all sizes. Attendees receive a complete 200-page course/reference binder for Part 1 with additional information on the topics presented. 

Prerequisites:
This is a group-live program at the Intermediate level. An understanding of construction accounting and financial management, with at least 3 years’ experience in those areas, is required.

Program Outline: 



Construction Taxation, Part 2

Building on the knowledge gained in Part 1 or through work experience, this course digs down into both complex and current taxation issues unique to the construction industry. Attendees receive a complete 200-page course/reference binder for Part 2 with additional information on the topics.

Prerequisites:
This is a group-live program at the Intermediate level. A good understanding of construction taxation principles and more than 3 years’ experience with construction taxation issues is required.

Program Outline: 



Contracts 101

You don’t need to be a lawyer to read a contract (though you absolutely want one to), but you do need to understand what you are reading. You also need to understand the major differences between the AIA documents and the new Consensus DOCS. This course will help you learn which clauses to look out for so you can protect your company’s bottom line.

This is a group-live course at the Introductory level. No prerequisites or advanced preparation required. A basic understanding of construction accounting & financial management is recommended.

Emergency Management Planning

30% of American businesses are not prepared for an emergency. This class will teach you the vital skills necessary to plan for a disaster and ensure the successful continuity of your business operations.

This is a group-live course at the Intermediate level. A basic understanding of construction accounting & financial management and business operation principles is recommended.

Fundamentals of Ethics

As a Construction Financial Professional, a wide range of people and businesses rely on your ethical behavior in the execution of your professional duties. In order for others to place the greatest reliance possible on your work, it is of utmost importance that you are guided by an ethical code of conduct in all your professional relationships.  This course presents ethical concepts, including a framework for analysis of ethical situations, and the use of case studies from actual construction situations.

This is a group-live course at the Introductory level. N

Project Management

Project Management is a process, as well as a procedure. It begins with project authorization and ends with the effective and timely closeout of each project task. This module takes you through the planning, operational, contract compliance, and closeout stages. This course is an introductory level course that is 4 hours and earns 4 CPE credits.

Prerequisites:
A basic understanding of construction accounting and how project management affects the financial management of a construction company.

Risk Management

Learn how to design and implement an effective risk management strategy for a construction company. This course is an introductory level course that is 4 hours and earns 4 CPE credits.

Prerequisites:
A basic understanding of the construction project process and construction accounting and financial management.

Treasury Management

Good treasury management is the key to an efficient and successful company. This class teaches you techniques vital to the effective management of organizations of all sizes. You’ll examine topics that range from risk management to the optimization of cash flow to banking & e-commerce practices. At the end of the day, you will have gained a strong understanding of the major facets of treasury management and how to apply them effectively. This course is an intermediate level course that is 4 hours and earns 4 CPE credits.

Prerequisites:
A working knowledge construction accounting and cash management.
