President’s Message

Spring 2008

It is hard to believe that my two year term as Chapter President is quickly drawing to a close. I know it is cliché, but it truly seems like it was just yesterday when Al Whiting passed the “gavel” over to me.

As I now reflect over these past two years, I realize that the chapter has made some great inroads in areas where we felt we could have been stronger in. Thanks to many of our members, the quality of our bi-monthly meeting programs and educational seminars have been first rate. Our chapter’s ability to present relative subject matter coupled with exceptional speakers has created somewhat of a financial windfall for the chapter. Another success is the increase in both the turnout and number of sponsors at our annual Golf Scramble, the proceeds of which benefit our scholarship fund. I have been privileged to attend several national conferences, and in my ensuing discussions with members from other chapters, the number one topic is always about how to increase membership and participation within the chapter. We are fortunate in the Maine Chapter to have a high member retention rate. Our high rate coupled with a significant increase in the number of new members, has all the markings of a successful chapter. However, a continuing goal of this chapter should be to increase membership attendance at our events and to encourage the membership’s participation in our various committees.

Over the next several months our chapter will be holding two events which I would encourage our membership to participate in.

On May 13, 2008, George Burns, Esq. from the law firm of Bernstein Shur, will present a program on Construction Contract Issues at our bi-monthly meeting. George is one of the preeminent lawyers in the state in the field of Construction Law and his topics are always very interesting and thought provoking. This meeting is being held at the Martindale Country Club in Auburn, ME and is scheduled to begin at 5:00 pm. An announcement with further details about this program will be mailed at a later date.

The next event is our golf outing with all proceeds designated to our Educational Scholarship Fund. This fund provides academic scholarships to selected college students currently enrolled in construction financial management programs within the State of Maine. This annual event is our major fundraiser for these annual academic scholarships.

This year’s event will again be held at the Spring Meadows Golf Course in Gray, Maine on Tuesday, July 22, 2008. Based upon the past event’s participant feedback, a good time is just about guaranteed, regardless of the score your team shoots or the amount of “mulligans” you end up purchasing. Remember it is never too early to start putting together a team and support a very worthy cause!

In closing, I would like to extend my personal invite to each member to attend one or both of our upcoming events. Our chapter’s continued growth and success are based on the participation of our membership. Finally, I would like to thank everyone for the support they have shown me over these past two years and it has been my privilege to serve as President of the Maine Chapter!

Sincerely,

Bill McLean

President's Message

Fall 2007

On September 11, 2007 the Maine Chapter of the CFMA sponsored an educational seminar on Advanced Accounting and Taxes for the Construction Industry which was held at the South Portland Marriott. Our distinguished guest and presenter at this event was Robert A. Davidson, CPA of Davidson, Golden & Lundy, P.C. Robert’s company is one of the largest and most well respected accounting and consulting firms serving the construction industry.

With nearly 75 attendees from various construction and construction services companies throughout the State of Maine, the wide range of accounting topics presented during the seminar provided the audience with an in-depth view of income recognition and reporting procedures unique to the construction industry. Other topics presented by Robert during the seminar included:

·        Ten Causes of Construction Failure

·        Contractor Benchmarking Procedures

·        Key Internal Controls and Procedures

·        Succession and Continuity Planning

·        Construction Claims and Change Orders

The Board of Directors of the Maine Chapter would like to take this opportunity to thank all attendees as your participation in this seminar was crucial to the success of this event. It is the board’s intent, on at least an annual basis, to continue to bring top-notch speakers into Maine in order to present relevant topics to all members of the construction industry. We encourage your feedback on both topics and speakers who you feel may be of interest to your industry peers.

In closing, I would again like to thank everyone for their attendance at this event. For those of you who were unable to make this seminar, we can provide you with a PDF. file detailing all topics covered during the seminar. Please contact me at 207-582-2338, extension 1910, if you would like to obtain this file.

Sincerely,

Bill McLean
